Sri Lanka: 1-Week Itinerary

One week is tight for Sri Lanka — but with focused planning, you can hit the essential highlights: the ancient ruins of the Cultural Triangle, the scenic highland train, the hill country around Ella, and a taste of the south coast beaches. This itinerary is the classic, most-travelled route and for good reason — it covers the best of the island in the available time.

Quick Overview

Duration
7 days
Best Season
Nov–Apr
Pace
Moderate
Transport
Train + tuk-tuk + driver
Budget/day
USD 60–150

Day 1: Arrive Colombo — Transfer to Sigiriya

Most international flights arrive at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), Negombo — skip Negombo for now and head directly to the Cultural Triangle (3 hours by car). Arrange a private transfer or hire a tuk-tuk driver for the day. Check into a guesthouse near Sigiriya and recover from the flight with a short afternoon walk around the Sigiriya village.

Day 2: Sigiriya and Dambulla

Rise early for Sigiriya Rock Fortress — aim to be at the gates when they open at 7am to climb before the heat and crowds arrive. Allow 3 hours for the climb and exploration. Afternoon: drive to Dambulla Cave Temple (45 minutes) — the UNESCO-listed cave paintings and 157 Buddha statues are one of Sri Lanka's finest heritage sites. Return to Sigiriya for the night.

Day 3: Polonnaruwa

Drive to Polonnaruwa (1 hour from Sigiriya). Rent a bicycle at the entrance and spend the morning cycling between the Gal Vihara rock carvings, the Quadrangle (the ceremonial heart of the ancient city), and the vast Parakrama Samudra reservoir. Allow 4–5 hours for the site. Afternoon: optional visit to Minneriya National Park for an evening elephant safari (July–October this is exceptional — the Elephant Gathering). Transfer to Kandy (3 hours).

Day 4: Kandy

Explore Kandy — Sri Lanka's cultural capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Morning: visit the Temple of the Tooth (arrive for the 9:30am puja), walk through the adjacent Kandy Lake, visit the colourful Kandy Market. Afternoon: Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya (6km from Kandy centre — one of Asia's finest botanical gardens). Evening: Kandyan cultural dance performance.

Day 5: Kandy to Ella — The Scenic Train

The highlight of any Sri Lanka trip. Board the morning train from Kandy (departing approximately 8:30am) for the 7-hour journey through the highlands to Ella. Book observation class or second class reserved seats in advance (months ahead in peak season via 12Go Asia). Arrive Ella late afternoon — check in and recover with dinner in town. See our train rides guide.

Day 6: Ella

Early morning hike to Ella Rock (depart by 6:30am for sunrise views over the Ella Gap) — a 3-hour return trek through tea estates to the granite summit. Afternoon: Little Adam's Peak (easier, 2-hour walk, with excellent valley views for sunset). Evening: explore Ella town, sample the wood-fired pizza and fresh juice cafes that have made Ella's food scene one of the best in the Hill Country.

Day 7: Ella to the South Coast

Drive from Ella to Mirissa or Unawatuna (3 hours by private transfer — the mountain road via Wellawaya is spectacular). Afternoon: beach. If visiting November–April, book a whale-watching boat for dawn the following morning (see our whale-watching guide). If your flight is from Colombo, plan a pre-dawn departure on Day 8 (2.5 hours by highway).

What This Itinerary Misses

One week inevitably leaves out much of Sri Lanka. Not covered: Anuradhapura and the sacred city, Galle Fort, Yala National Park (leopard safaris), Jaffna and the north, the east coast (Arugam Bay, Trincomalee). If any of these matter to you, consider a 2-week itinerary instead.
