Ella is a small mountain village in Sri Lanka's Uva Province that has earned a near-legendary reputation among travellers. Set at 1,041 metres above sea level, surrounded by emerald tea estates, waterfalls and dramatic rocky peaks, it's one of the most visually stunning places in all of Sri Lanka.
What to Do in Ella
Hike Ella Rock
The hike to Ella Rock is the area's most rewarding activity — a 3-hour return trek through tea plantations to a summit with panoramic views of Ella Gap. Start early to catch the morning mist.
Little Adam's Peak
An easier 2-hour return hike that's perfect for sunset. The trail runs through fragrant tea estates with beautiful views of Ella Gap and the surrounding hills.
Nine Arch Bridge
Ella's most photographed landmark — a stunning colonial-era stone viaduct built entirely without steel. Time your visit for when the train crosses (check the schedule at your guesthouse).
Ravana Falls
A 25-metre curtain waterfall on the road to Wellawaya. Most easily visited as a short stop on the way to/from Ella.
