Arugam Bay is one of those rare destinations that surfers discover and immediately plan to return to. The A-Bay point break — a long, walling right-hander over a sand-covered reef — has been featured in surfing magazines worldwide and is consistently ranked among the top ten surf spots in Asia. But Arugam Bay is more than its wave: it is also a genuinely charming village of palm-shaded dirt roads, laid-back guesthouses, excellent cheap food, and extraordinary wildlife in the surrounding lagoon and jungle. The combination of world-class surf and a completely unpretentious, affordable beach lifestyle makes it uniquely compelling.

The Surf

The main point break (simply called "A-Bay Point" or "the Main Break") is a right-hander that can produce waves of 1–3 metres during the peak season of June to October. The wave is best for intermediate to advanced surfers — it has a fast take-off and a long wall that rewards surfers who can read the line. Beginners are better served by the Main Beach (in front of the village) where a gentler beach break provides more forgiving conditions. Boards can be rented along the main strip for around LKR 800–1,200 per day; lessons are available from several instructors for USD 20–30 for two hours. Several other breaks are accessible by tuk-tuk — Pottuvil Point (20 minutes north, more powerful), Peanut Farm (30 minutes south, less crowded) and the remote Elephant Rock point.

Pottuvil Lagoon

The broad lagoon behind the village is one of Arugam Bay's best-kept secrets — a wildlife-rich waterway of mangroves, mudflats and shallow channels that can be explored by canoe or motorboat at dawn. Elephants come to drink and bathe at the lagoon edges at sunrise; crocodiles bask on the mudbanks; kingfishers, herons, egrets and jacanas are everywhere. Several operators in the village offer early morning lagoon safaris — typically 2 hours for around USD 20–25 per person. The combination of surfing all day and a wildlife safari at dawn is what makes Arugam Bay so unexpectedly special.

Nearby Surf Points & Attractions

Panama Beach (30 minutes south by tuk-tuk) is a pristine, empty stretch of sand that few tourists reach. Kumana National Park (50km south) is an excellent wildlife reserve — particularly famous for its birds (the large painted stork colony is extraordinary) and also has elephants, leopards and crocodiles. The ancient monastery of Muhudu Maha Viharaya, dating to the 1st century BC, sits dramatically on a dune beside the sea near Panama.
